The Journey so far...

Parimaarjan's Art and Educational program completed a year on August 15, 2008. It has been a humble beginning with an attempt to adopt an urban slum near Sector 18 in NOIDA. A few milestones achieved, a few lives improved...

The National Capital Region of India is gearing up to host guests from all across the Commonwealth countries, but while the city is being cleaned up for the games, the urban poor are being shoved further in to invisibility. Even as the numbers in these JJ clusters continue to rise, there is little attention being paid to raising their strandards or providing amenities.

This is a generation growing among severe disparities. Located in sector 18, NOIDA this JJ Cluster is completely hidden under the concrete jungle of huge Malls, five star hotels and posh commercial markets. These children are exposed to all the things their hearts would desire, but have access to none.

A year back Priyanka condemned herself and felt sorry for her dream to learn proper english was always a distant one. She did not have the previlidge of attending an English medium public school, but with her hard work and support from our Retired Teacher volunteer Mrs Sachdeva who runs this program, Priyanka is getting closer to realising her dream everyday. She was exhuberating with confidence as she delivered her speech in English on the relevance of Independence Day and our freedom fighters in front of a fairly large audience. An audience that couldnt understand a thing of what she said, stared blankly with awestruck eyes, waited patiently for an approval from the english speaking guests, and then applauded with the loudest possible cheers as though it was the best speech they ever heard. It was a proud moment for not just for Priyanka but for the others in the community too.

Priyanka had always had the urge to learn, but for most others, this urge had been missing all together. Almost 75% boys in this JJ cluster drop out of school before completing 10th standard. Kabir has been one of them, he was so motivated to see Priyanka talk that he now wants his younger siblings to study too.
